Typhinity
Typha compost
Typhinity is a startup based in Nouakchott, Mauritania, that converts Typha (cattail), a genus of highly invasive plant species, into biochar and fertilizer.
The Typhinity innovation
Typhinity is promoting an alternative solution to chemical fertilizers by transforming Typha, combined with manure, into organic compost and biochar for farmers. This innovation promotes soil health, enhances water infiltration and retention, boosts agricultural yields, and facilitates the restoration of degraded lands.

Many farmers still rely on and purchase inorganic inputs, with only limited use of compost. While they are familiar with imported organic materials like copra and peat, Typha composting is still new to them. Typhinity has already developed product prototypes and secured interested clients, but financing remains a major hurdle to scaling up production.
Typhinity has received a grant of €8,000 (eight thousand euros) from the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) through the Knowledge for Great Green Wall Action (K4GGWA) programme, funded by the European Union. This grant will help implement the next phase of the project, which will focus on three key initiatives:
- Acquiring and deploying a Typha cutting machine;
- Establishing model farms to train producers in using Typha-based compost and biochar;
- Developing a marketing plan to encourage adoption of Typhinity’s compost and biochar products.
