The Pastoralist’s Camp Fire Range (Rayon Eleveur) innovation

Nomadic pastoralists often unintentionally spark wildfires when they fail to clear fuel from around their campfires. This is a problem not only for nearby farmers, but also for the pastoralists themselves, as they lose precious forage.

Mr Adamou Youssoufou Malam Issa developed a simple yet effective tool: an Amir rope that enables families to mark clear circles around their campfires, within which they clear away all vegetation and other fuel. He presented this innovation to the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), where it was well received.

He has received a grant of €2,500 (two thousand five hundred euros) from the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) through the Knowledge for Great Green Wall Action (K4GGWA) programme, funded by the European Union. This grant will help implement the next phase of the project, which will focus on the following initiatives:

  • Encouraging adoption of the livestock farming programme by at least 20% of nomadic pastoral families who set up camp in the Tarka, Belbedji and Zinder areas;
  • Securing formal endorsement of the programme by the Zinder Region Water and Forestry Administration;
  • Publishing a peer-reviewed report in a recognized scientific journal analysing the livestock farming programme’s impact on fire risk reduction.
