The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has implemented GCS REDD+ activities in Peru since the program’s first phase in 2009. These collaborative efforts have involved both national and subnational government institutions, non-governmental organizations, Indigenous Peoples’ organizations, research institutions and private-sector actors.

The key results of GCS REDD+ Phase 3 (2016–20) in Peru were:

  • the inclusion of peatlands in Peru’s forest reference emissions level
  • technical assistance to develop the national strategy for forests and climate change
  • the collaborative design (with the National Protected Areas Service) of ¿Cómo an adaptive and reflexive learning tool to support equitable participation in the management committees of protected areas
  • with the National Organization of Indigenous Andean and Amazonian Women of Peru (ONAMIAP), the adaptation of ¿Cómo vamos? to address gender inequalities in accessing communal governance and representation.

All the work packages under Phase 4 of GCS REDD+ (2021–23) involve the implementation of research and engagement activities in Peru, ranging from research on deforestation and degradation archetypes to the development of pathways for rights-responsive safeguards. As part of this phase, CIFOR and the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) have organized a science policy platform that brings together members of the project’s policy advisory group. The platform meets twice a year to promote the exchange of information and learning among key REDD+ actors in Peru, to share the lessons learned from other countries, and to align project activities with national needs.
